We were anchored in Codville Lagoon on King Island when we decided we needed to go home to address some family issues. Since then, we’ve been trying to put 50 miles or so under our keel every day with a goal of being in Bellingham, Wash., by about July 11. Our plan is to have Sundown hauled out and blocked (set on jack stands) at Seaview North where she’ll wait for our return. When that will be is still to be determined. Two or three weeks maybe? Time will tell.
So as we travel south as fast as weather and sea conditions allow, we’re feeling a bit melancholy. We’ve met and hung out with so many wonderful people. There’s Chris from Pittsburgh; Brad and Janet from Comox; Dutch from Qualicum Beach; Enid and Richard from New Zealand; Ruth and Harold from Maple Bay; and Joseph and his friend Gabi, who we know from Deer Harbor where we moored last winter (they are headed to Alaska and we crossed paths).
Ruth, Harold, Clay and I toured Bella Coola by rental car. We had a picnic lunch and then drove up the Bella Coola Hill.
And the sights we’ve seen! If you follow our adventure at all you know what I’m talking about. Whales, porpoise, seals, otters, eagles, fjords, glaciers and so much more!
The timing of this trip seems a bit ironic to me personally. A month ago, I was so homesick, I almost couldn’t function. It seemed that every little thing–from eating an apple to listening to music to watching little sea creatures to using my laptop–would trigger a torrential storm of tears. Everything reminded me of some aspect of home. Thankfully, I seem to have gotten past the worst of that, however, and am really settling into this sea gypsy life…just in time to take a break from it.
And Clay’s bummed to leave this beautiful region of the world. He’s such an explorer at heart and there are still lots of fish to catch, including the elusive big halibut!
That said, we are excited to see everyone! We will pick up our adventure where we leave off soon enough.
Safe journey! We Look forward to your return. thinking also of Peg, Brad and Shawn. Blessings.
